Warwickshire Hedgehog Rescue is a registered charity (Charity number 1183331).
The objectives of the charity are:
- For the benefit of the public to relieve the suffering and distress of hedgehogs in need of care and attention by providing and maintaining rescue facilities for the reception, care and treatment of such animals in the Warwickshire area.
- To advance public education in the study of hedgehogs to increase their knowledge including the conservation and habitat of hedgehogs.
Hedgehogs have been identified as being vulnerable to extinction and placed on the Red List. Although they are still relatively common and widespread, there has been a dramatic decline in their numbers in recent years, with around a third of the national population lost since the millennium due to a wide range of factors.
Our group aims to provide care to and rehabilitation of sick and injured hedgehogs from our area (brought in by the public or from local vets) and return them to the wild following treatment which can often take several months. In the majority of cases and when the hedgehogs are well enough, they will be returned to the place where they were found.
We are made up of a dedicated group of rescue carers, all volunteers, who run rescues from their own premises. They, in turn, are supported by a team of foster carers.
All our running costs are met entirely by public donations, charitable trust grants and ourselves, from our own purse. Without these generous financial donations and the volunteers themselves, Warwickshire Hedgehog Rescue would cease to exist. Any help you can give the Rescue in our task of saving hedgehogs will be much appreciated. Our largest annual financial costs are for food and medical care which includes the purchase of a multitude of different medications, appliances and veterinary treatments.
Meet The Trustees
The Charity is regulated by the Charity Commission. The Trustees have collective responsibility for the running of the Charity and all policy decisions. The Trustees are all rescue carers:
Clare Watson (Chair)
Liz Lyne
Gemma Smith
Sally Ellis
Ken Faisey (Treasurer)
Hedgehogs are wild animals and easily stressed. It is illegal to keep a wild hedgehog as a pet.
We operate a policy of euthanasia on welfare grounds, under veterinary advice, and we work within the relevant UK veterinary and welfare legislation. Animal welfare is our prime concern at all times.
